Welcome to the Dementia Learning and Development Team HQ! We are delighted to have you here. We are an innovative Multidisciplinary Team focused on improving the lives of people living with Dementia by supporting those around them. Whether this be in the form of training, education, mentorship or project support; to name a few!

We work within the Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP) department in University Hospital Llandough, Penarth.

We incorporate Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care (PAC) Dementia education material into our training sessions. Within our team we have fully qualified PAC trainers, coaches and a consultant.



Our Accreditations:

We are Carer Friendly accredited and received our Bronze award in 2022!

As a team we are committed to promoting and improving our cultural competence in relation to our Cardiff and Vale population. We are currently working on our Diverse Cymru Cultural Competency Accreditation.

The format, content and delivery of our training uses our Postgraduate Certificates in Education (PGCE) learning theory to support our learners. We use a multimodal approach and materials to ensure that we value individual identity and learning needs. We have a robust feedback system to support our team in ensuring that we continue to meet this goal.



Talking Mats

The RPB has funded two Talking Mats trainers and we have begun to provide training across Cardiff and Vale this year.

Talking Mats Ltd is a social enterprise which improves the lives of people with communication difficulties by increasing their capacity, time and opportunities to think about and express views about things that matter to them.

The Talking Mats visual communication framework grew out of research conducted at the University of Stirling. Research shows use of Talking Mats improves both the quality and quantity of information gained. Speech and Language Therapists (SLT) use Talking Mats to facilitate communication for people with communication / cognitive difficulties as it lessens the importance on verbal receptive and expressive language skills.

Talking Mats are a common tool used by SLT to complete, record, and report complex topic discussions with people living with Dementia as it produces a logical and robust frame for the discussion. The tool can be used to support assessment of mental capacity as well as more informal settings e.g. supporting biographical tools such as read about me.
